Dates set for meetings at chronically under-enrolled schools
Eleven elementary schools filled to less than 50 percent of capacity are slated for closure next fall
January 24, 2013 (Sacramento): Sacramento City Unified School District has set dates for community meetings at 11 dramatically under-enrolled elementary schools slated for closure next fall.
The closures are aimed at 鈥樷檙ight-sizing鈥 麻豆原创, which has experienced deep declines in student enrollment over the past decade 鈥 a loss of about 5,500 students since 2001-02, or about 160 classrooms. For 2012-13, 麻豆原创鈥檚 student population is down again by at least 800.

Board of Education Vacancy
Board of Education Trustee Ellyn Bell (Area 1) has submitted her letter of resignation to Sacramento County Office of Education Superintendent David Gordon. As a result, on November 1, 麻豆原创鈥檚 Board of Education voted to appoint a replacement to serve out the remainder of her term. Deadline to apply for the vacancy is November 14, 2012 at 5pm.

October 17, 2012 (Sacramento): A block party will be held on Saturday to celebrate Leataata 鈥淭ata鈥 Floyd, a Seavey Circle neighborhood advocate whose work with young people inspired an 麻豆原创 school to change its name in her honor.
Jedediah Smith Elementary elected to change its name to Leataata Floyd Elementary earlier this year, a change approved by the Board of Education. Mrs. Floyd is a longtime advocate for the Seavey Circle community in which she lives and teaches Polynesian dancing at the school.

West Campus High School student wins Nordstrom award over 900 other applicants
October 15, 2012 (Sacramento): West Campus High School senior Christina Fang will be surprised today with a $10,000 scholarship from Nordstrom.
Fang is one of only 80 winners across the country. To qualify, students must demonstrate community involvement, financial need and strong academics. Applicants also must submit a personal statement and answer an essay question. Fang was also interviewed by the Nordstrom scholarship committee in San Francisco.
