September 17, 2012 (Sacramento):  Sacramento City Unified School District will hold the first of four community bullying prevention trainings at Luther Burbank High School tomorrow night (Tuesday, September 18).

The trainings are free and open to anyone in the community who wants to learn more about bullying.

鈥淲e鈥檙e working hard to raise awareness of bullying so our students can better advocate for themselves when bullying occurs,鈥 said 麻豆原创 Bullying Prevention Specialist Sheila Self.麻豆原创 is the only school district in the region with a full-time expert dedicated to curbing dangerously aggressive behaviors. 鈥淭he safety of our kids is our top priority.鈥

The community trainings are part of a district-wide crackdown on bullying that began in June 2011 when 麻豆原创鈥檚 Board of Education approved a sweeping new anti-bullying policy aimed at reducing incidents of bullying on campus and in cyberspace.  The policy defines bullying as severe or pervasive aggressive behavior 鈥 including electronic acts 鈥 intentionally directed at one or more students that result in:
鈥 Fear of harm
鈥 A detrimental effect on physical or mental health
鈥 A substantial interference with academic performance
鈥 A substantial interference with the ability to participate in or benefit from school or activities.

At the trainings, parents can learn how to identify bullying behaviors and what to do if their child is being bullied, Self said. 鈥淏ullying is such a high-profile issue,鈥 she said. 鈥淲e want to make sure families have the tools to recognize it and get help.鈥
