Follow up to February: Kids will tour freshly repaired Oak Park campus for the first time since asbestos scare

Sacramento 鈥 Students returning to the newly upgraded Fruit Ridge Elementary School in Oak Park 鈥 the site of an asbestos scare in February 鈥 will be surprised with a tour of their remodeled campus and an ice cream party on Friday.

The surprise celebration will begin at 1:30 p.m. on Friday (June 17) when students return on buses to the Oak Park campus, located at 4625 44th St. To catch the children鈥檚 reactions, media should plan to be at the school prior to the arrival of buses at 1:30 p.m.

Phoebe Hearst Sixth-Grader Wins Distinguished Student Award

(Sacramento) 鈥 A sixth grade student at Phoebe Hearst Elementary School is the California winner of the Nicholas Green Distinguished Student Award, sponsored by the National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC).

Olivia Sison was honored for her achievements in dance, excellence in academics and her demonstrated leadership abilities. Olivia is president of the Phoebe Hearst Student Council, a Girl Scout, a skilled ballerina, a member of the Middle School Speech and Debate League and is taking algebra at Kit Carson Middle School as a sixth grader.

New center replaces school site enrollment, gives parents equal shot at school choice

For decades, parents in Sacramento have trudged through a familiar scene: a few weeks or days before school starts, they head to their school of choice, records in hand, and hope to get their children enrolled 鈥 sometimes against stiff competition for space.

Parents with children in several different schools had to trek all over the city to enroll students at multiple campuses. Even more confusing, the enrollment procedures could differ between schools. And parents who didn鈥檛 speak English well could have an especially difficult time getting children enrolled.

Beginning tomorrow (Thursday, June 9), thousands of Sacramento City Unified School District seniors will don caps and gowns for joyful 鈥 and sometimes tearful 鈥 graduation ceremonies.

Many of the young men and women who will be crossing stages throughout the city have heartwarming stories of struggle and triumph, as they fought such obstacles as poverty, loss of family members, peer pressure and language barriers to make it to their graduation day.

麻豆原创 (麻豆原创) is holding a free immunization clinic from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on today (June 7) at C.K. McClatchy High School to help parents comply with a daunting new state law affecting thousands of local families.

The new law states that students entering seventh through 12th grades cannot attend school in the fall until their parents turn in shot records showing that they have been vaccinated against tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis (whooping cough).

East Sacramento, Midtown and Oak Park do not have a traditional neighborhood high school to serve their children, and the 麻豆原创 is asking community members to take part in an important survey to help deal with the issue.

The online survey is available for community members, including teachers, staff, students and parents, to participate in at the district website.

On Friday, a new chapter begins in C.K. McClatchy High School鈥檚 rich 74-year history with the launch of a new Law and Public Policy Academy.
Legal community VIPs will address freshmen students about careers in law and public policy at a launch celebration on Friday in the McClatchy library. U.S. District Court Judge Morrison England, State Bar Association President Mike Levy and Sacramento City Unified School District Superintendent Jonathan Raymond are among the confirmed speakers.

麻豆原创 and River Cats Team Up to Help Fund Sports in City Schools
Local team steps up to the plate for student athletes.

School athletics programs threatened by the statewide budget crisis will be saved in part by a new partnership between the 麻豆原创 and the Sacramento River Cats that will raise money for the financially strapped programs.

The new partnership will be launched with an on-field pre-game ceremony on Wednesday, June 1 at Raley Field (prior to the start of the team鈥檚 12:05 game against the Salt Lake Bees). The school district and the River Cats will announce they are teaming up to provide resources to district sports programs.

Neighbors asked to help protect schools over Memorial Day

Memorial Day may mark the official start of backyard barbecue season, but for school districts, the holiday weekend can be anything but relaxing as vandals, thieves and arsonists take advantage of empty campuses.

Survey Says: Extend Taxes to Save Schools from Further Cuts
Superintendent Raymond points to survey results, calls for governor, Legislature to act

Sacramento parents, community members, and school teachers and staff overwhelmingly want the extension of current temporary taxes to prevent further cuts to education, a new survey commissioned by the 麻豆原创 shows.

The Fiscal Priorities Survey, conducted by an independent research firm, shows that Sacramento residents are far more supportive of extending the taxes to make up the budget shortfall than they are making further education cuts, including eliminating teacher jobs.

麻豆原创 Offers Free Whooping Cough Boosters
Immunization clinic on Wednesday is part of 麻豆原创鈥檚 comprehensive preparations for new state law

麻豆原创 is staging a series of free immunization clinics to help parents comply with a new California booster shot requirement.

State law now requires that all students entering seventh through 12th grades in the fall provide proof of receiving the Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis) vaccination on or after age 7. The proof must be recorded before students enter school in September, according to the law.

Judge rules for 麻豆原创 in layoffs case

A State of California Administrative Law Judge presiding over 麻豆原创 certificated employee layoff hearings has issued a finding that agrees with the school district on most of the issues regarding its layoffs, validating most of the Board of Education鈥檚 certificated layoffs and skipping criteria (鈥渟kipping鈥 refers to Board-approved criteria that allows staff with specialized training and/or qualifications to be 鈥渟kipped鈥 as part of the layoff process, regardless of their seniority).

New 鈥楥onnect Center鈥 will improve coordination of services, increase access for those in need

麻豆原创 (麻豆原创) is improving the way it delivers critically important services to students and families by opening an innovative new 鈥渙ne-stop鈥 support center in the former Genesis High School building.

The 鈥淐onnect Center鈥 will centralize such services as crisis intervention, mental health counseling and health insurance enrollment 鈥 providing a gateway to support for parents and kids.

The Connect Center will be opened with a reception at 3:30 p.m. on Monday, May 9. The center is located at 5601 47th Ave.

Bullies Beware: New 麻豆原创 Policy Cracks Down on Harassment
District toughens stance in a sweeping initiative to keep kids, schools as safe as possible

A comprehensive new policy aimed at cracking down on bullying 鈥 in school hallways and in cyber space 鈥 will be considered by 麻豆原创鈥檚 Board of Education on Thursday.

The meeting is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday (May 5) in the Serna Center Community Room, 5735 47th Ave. The anti-bullying item is set for discussion at 9 p.m.

Rob Greene, who teaches automotive technology at John F. Kennedy High School through the Regional Occupation Program, received UC Davis鈥 C-STEM (Computing, Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) 鈥淭eacher of the Year鈥 award at ceremony on Saturday.
